Who we are
BC Daycares is a free online directory that helps families in British Columbia find licensed child care facilities. This site is operated by Bottletop Media (“BC Daycares,” “we,” “us”). You can reach us at hello@bcdaycares.ca.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and your choices.
What we collect
Information you give us when you subscribe. If you sign up for updates, we collect your email address. We don’t ask for your name, payment details, or any information about your children as part of that subscription.
Account and sign-in information. If you request a passwordless sign-in link, we collect your email address and keep an authentication record so we can sign you in and connect your account with a facility claim. We never ask you to create a password.
Facility claim information. If you claim a facility listing, we collect the facility you are claiming, your name and role, an optional business phone number, and the explanation or evidence you provide to verify your connection. We also record submission and decision timestamps, claim status, and internal verification decision notes.
Claim submissions and verification records are private to the claimant and authorized BC Daycares administrators. If a claim is approved, the public listing shows only a neutral “Listing claimed by the operator” note. It does not show the claimant’s name, email, phone number, evidence, or our internal decision notes.
A facility may separately ask us to publish business contact details, hours, ages served, availability, or other listing information. We publish only the information submitted for that purpose, label it as facility-provided, and show when it was last updated. Private claim evidence and internal moderation records are not published with it.
Location searches. If you choose to search near an address or landmark, the text you submit is sent directly to Mapbox so it can identify the location. We do not save the submitted address in our database, and we remove nearby-search coordinates from the page address sent to Google Analytics.
Information collected automatically. When you visit the site we collect standard analytics through Google Analytics 4: pages viewed, approximate location (derived from your IP address), device and browser type, and how you arrived. This helps us understand what’s useful and improve the site. Some of this is collected using cookies and similar technologies. When you sign in or submit a claim, limited technical request information is also processed to secure the service, prevent abuse, and rate-limit submissions.
What we do not collect. We do not collect payment information. We do not knowingly collect personal information from or about children. Do not include personal information about children in claim evidence or listing-update requests. Facility information from public and official sources is described below.
How we use your information
- To send you the updates you asked for (new facilities, $10 a Day listings, and product updates as the directory grows).
- To send passwordless sign-in links, authenticate your account, and keep it secure.
- To review and manually verify a facility claim, record the decision, contact the claimant about it, and administer an approved claim.
- To receive and manually review facility information or listing updates submitted by an approved claimant.
- To prevent fraud, misuse, and competing or false claims.
- To operate, secure, and improve the site.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to serve you ads.
Your consent and email (CASL)
We only email you marketing messages after you confirm your subscription through a double opt-in: you enter your email, we send a confirmation message, and you must click to confirm. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can withdraw consent at any time. Unsubscribing stops marketing email; it does not require a reason.
Passwordless sign-in links, claim receipts, and claim-decision emails are service messages sent in response to account or claim activity. Requesting a sign-in link or submitting a claim does not subscribe you to marketing. Marketing email requires a separate confirmed subscription.
Service providers we share with
We use trusted third parties to run the site. They only receive what they need to provide their service, and several are located in the United States, so your information may be processed outside Canada:
- Kit (ConvertKit)— email signup and newsletter delivery
- Resend— sign-in, confirmation, and transactional claim email
- Supabase— passwordless authentication, database, and hosting of account and claim data
- Vercel— website hosting
- Cloudflare— security and content delivery
- Google Analytics— site analytics
- Google Maps Platform / Places and Mapbox— maps and facility photos
We don’t otherwise share your personal information, except where required by law or to protect the safety and rights of others.
Where facility data comes from
Facility listings are built from the Province of British Columbia’s licensed child care records, made available under the Open Government Licence – British Columbia, and supplemented with information from Google (such as photos, hours, and ratings). See our Data page for details. This is information about facilities, not personal information we have collected about you.
How long we keep your information
We keep your email address for as long as you’re subscribed, and for a reasonable period afterward to honour unsubscribe requests and meet legal obligations. We keep an authentication record while needed to provide and secure your account.
Because claim information is used to decide whether to approve, reject, or revoke a claim, we keep the information supporting that decision for at least one year after the decision. We may keep claim and decision records longer where needed to administer an approved claim, prevent fraud, resolve competing claims or disputes, or meet legal or business obligations. We delete or anonymize personal information when it is no longer needed for those purposes. Analytics data is retained according to our Google Analytics settings.
Your rights
Under BC’s Personal Information Protection Act and Canada’s PIPEDA, you can:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct information that is inaccurate. Claims cannot be edited directly after submission, so contact us to request a correction.
- Withdraw consent to marketing at any time.
To make a request, email our Privacy Officer (below). We will respond within 30 days, unless the law permits an extension.
Privacy Officer
We have designated a Privacy Officer responsible for our compliance with this policy. You can reach our Privacy Officer at hello@bcdaycares.ca with “Privacy” in the subject line.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect the limited information we hold.
Children
This site is intended for parents and caregivers, not children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it. Facility claimants must not include personal information about children in claim evidence or update requests.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site grows. We’ll change the “last updated” date above and, for significant changes, give notice on the site.
Governing law
This policy is governed by the laws of British Columbia and the applicable laws of Canada.
